Ever since the start-up of the very first Nuclear Power Plant, Reactor Coolant Pump Motors have been operating and performing an important and vital role, both in the operation of the power plant but also in maintaining a critical safety function. These vital pieces of equipment are required and expected to perform, without problems and without any mishaps. The OEM has identified periodic maintenance cycles to assist owners with knowing when they should be performing inspections on the motors. Whether it’s a 1-year, 5-year or 10-year inspection, ensuring that one’s motors are being serviced on a regular basis is of the utmost important in today’s nuclear industry. Though not prevalent, there are the documented occurrences where lack of maintenance and/or the lacking of a strong inspection program led to the failure of an operating RCP Motor. Some involved a major component failure, while others involved a “simple” ten-dollar part that caused a five-hundred thousand dollar problem. In either case, the general consensus of route-cause analysis determined an insufficiency in the area of inspection and maintenance. Even the best of maintenance programs cannot provide 100% assurance that nothing will happen, however the better the program, the better the chances of ensuring that the motor will operate and perform up to the expectations placed on it. Given all this, there still remains a wide spectrum of inspection and maintenance procedures among the various site RCP Motor programs. From performing minimal inspections and basic refurbishments to annual complete tear-down, inspection and replacement of all critical components, more and more sites are recognizing the importance of maintaining their RCP Motors. An important aspect of the inspection and refurbishment of the RCP Motor is a thorough understanding of the various components within the motor. Just knowing what the part is and its general function is not enough. One must have a complete understanding of the part, and in particular, when and what are the signs that it may be reaching the end of its service life.
